Stig Kristoffersen asked:
Riga began as settlement of German missionaries in the 12th century as a base, from which they would work toward the conversion of nearby inhabitants. By the end of the 13th century Riga was an active participant in international trade, with a centralized government and fast becoming a major city. The 16th century brought wars, which plagued the city until the 18th century when Russia took over the city. Following World War I, Riga regained independence until after World War II when Russia again took control. Riga regained independence in the 1990’s. Turning to tourism as a source of economic growth, Riga is a great tourist site today.
Air flights land at the Riga Airport and from there several means of transportation are available to your hotel. Riga has many hotels and there are flights and hotels to fit every budget. Among the attractions is Old Riga a great place to spend time and meet the locals whether its summer or winter. The House of Blackheads is an interesting spot to visit or attend one of the many concerts held at this site. Freedom Monument, symbolic of the three regions of Latvia includes a solemn hourly ceremony for changing of the guards.
The best time to go is between May and September, but whenever you travel to Riga there is no lack of things to do, things to see, places to eat and events to entertain you. The Club Essential and the Skyline Bar will fill your evenings with drinks and fun.
